What is your favorite type of wedding to be a part of?

That’s a tough one! I tend to love all of them but there are two things that make some of them pop out in my head. First and foremost is a couple that is truly comfortable with each other, enjoying each other and enjoying their day. I’ll find myself behind the camera with a little smile on my face as I catch bride and groom laughing, looking lovingly at each other, making fun of each other…whatever the moment brings! I also love couples that put really special little touches into their day to make it their own. Not necessarily expensive favors or over the top flowers, but things that really show off who they are. I had a couple that met for the first time at a grocery store when she offered him her left over Oreo snack before she threw it away. We went and took photos at that little grocery store and they gave their guests Oreo treats as favors. How cute is that?!

What are your favorite 'of the moment' wedding colors?

This is a dangerous question - just ask my husband. I have what he likes to call Color Attention Deficit Disorder. I have repainted my dining room 4 times in 5 years. You can see from our site and logo that Kristie and I love limey greens, however I seem to be developing a new addiction to yellow. And I have no explanation whatsoever. Never know then the C.A.D.D. will strike!

What is a word or phrase that describes you or your business?

Uh-oh. I tend to be rather verbose so there is absolutely no way I can keep it to a word or phrase. See?! Already over my quota. That being said, besides always striving to produce the best possible images for our clients, we like to think that we are down-to-earth, friendly, normal (which I realize is relative), happy girls that love what we do. And we think that attracts the kind of clients we like – the ones that feel like old friends by the time it’s all said and done! And then stick around in our lives for years through first babies, birthdays, first steps, new homes, etc. On another random note, if we had a smell it would be fresh baked cookies. Who doesn’t like cookies?! And yes, we’ve actually discussed this.

What was your biggest 'big' moment?

I often forget to think of what I do as a business. That being said, something really cool happened this year. In January we had THREE featured weddings in different magazines hit the shelves all at once. It was really cool to see that other people were enjoying our work and recognizing how impressively beautiful and creative our clients are.

What is the best advice you can give to brides-to-be?

Jeez…where to start! One of my big rules is never to give unsolicited advice but you asked! So it all comes down to this…enjoy every minute. Enjoy hanging with your girlfriends while stuffing favors, enjoy shopping for a dress with your mom, enjoy getting to know your mother in law better over addressing invitations, savor the cake tasting, try on a million pairs of shoes, love all of it. And always remember to stop for a minute and take it all in – both the planning days and the actual day. Also be prepared to laugh off anything that doesn’t go exactly as planned. Because not everything will go exactly as planned!

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

I am a bit of a magazine junkie. I wish I could say I was part of a book club and was well read in many recent award-winning manuscripts, but I truly enjoy magazines for the pictures.  Not because I don’t LIKE to read but because I consider it research! I’m particularly drawn to wedding mags (of course!), fashion, food and décor. Where some people see a good recipe I see interesting angles and new lighting ideas on that rack of lamb in the accompanying photo. In the fashion mags I see new posing ideas, lighting approaches and prop and location ideas (very useful for trash the dress sessions.) It’s all eye candy!

Favorite STL spot?

When I see the words “favorite spot” my mind immediately goes to food and drinks. Is that wrong?! I love hanging out at my little Greek restaurant in Dogtown – Olympia Kebob and Taverna. It has been one of my favorite places for well over 15 years. All of my dearest friends and I have created some great memories there...well, from what we can remember. Later in the evenings things tend to get a little fuzzy. There is always a special comfort in a familiar place surrounded by friends.

Indulgence or weakness?

Hanging out on the couch with my husband and my wiener dogs covered in a fuzzy blanket and lounging on fluffy pillows. It is the best place ever and it’s really hard to leave and go be a productive human being sometimes!

Design Board | Sophisticated Bright Colors

I, by nature, am attracted to neutral, soft, classic colors - my favorites being creams, greys, blues, etc. So, I've stepped out of my color comfort zone to create this bright yet sophisticated color palette featuring aquas, peony pink, poppy red and pale seafoams. As I've said before, I love color palettes that have many, many colors that coordinate and compliment each other. While monogamy is good in marriage, try to stay away from just one color for your wedding - it might end up too monotonous!

"I love the idea of formally asking those whom you would like to be in your bridal party. I sent out a cards for my own wedding so that inspired me to come up with a cute project to do the same. I adore the paper chain people that we all learned to make in grade school and this project uses that simple concept to introduce your bridesmaids to everyone. Cut out the shape of the dress you plan on using in the color you desire and personalize each person with some paper hair. To complete the set I created a little card asking “Will you be my bridesmaid?” and included the wedding details as well as how and where to order the dresses. Design Board | Country Chic

Remember this "Country Chic" design board? Well, the wedding was last weekend (hence my blogging absence - sorry!). It was so beautiful - the weather cooperated perfectly. I only have this one shot so far (that I took), but I will be getting more images from Epaga Foto soon!

The tables were set on the lawn and dressed in a pale yellow and cream burlap.

I made the bridal bouqet - white hydrangeas, yellow freesia, and pale yellow garden roses. Stay tuned for the step-by-step DIY.

Creating a bouquet can be so much fun. It is one of my favorite things to do for a DIY wedding.

Bouquet 101 : Keep it simple

*Use only 2-3 types of flowers

*Use only 1-3 shades of colors

*Use a variety of shapes, sizes and textures

5 White Hydrangeas, 10 stems of Yellow Freesia, and 10 Pale Yellow Garden Roses

I added Dusty Miller around the "collar" of the bouquet to give it some softness.

I just came across this super fun/sophisticated/flirty/wild wedding from EpagaFOTO - I love the vibrant colors! Jessica Roark (principle photographer of EpagaFOTO, Bliss List member) shot this wedding... she does an amazing job of really capturing all of the details, moments and emotions- don't you think?!

Her bouquet is so much fun - lime green and white orchids and funky peacock feathers.

The bridesmaids chose from two colors - love the non-monochromatic look!

Real Wedding | Creative Wedding

This wedding is "Sweet as Pie"... The reception was held at the Iron Woods Lodge in Leawood - such a beautiful venue full of character. Captured by Tyler Wirken of Wirken Photography. To see more photos of this wedding, visit the Bliss List KC Wedding Gallery.

This photo is taken in back of the big red barn that held the reception. The Lodge is in a city owned park in Leawood, KS.

I love how Tyler found the blue tiled walls to compliment the bright cherry red dresses - it changes the whole look of the wedding - adds a modern, fresh feeling. Her bouquet is comprised of red gerbera daisies & white daisies.

Look at the fun homemade desserts! The red & white checked tablecloth is lovely - and the red napkins? They say "Sweet as Pie" - love it.

DIY tissue balls are a great alternative to paper lanterns. They are inexpensive and add a great pop of color and charm - just the right amount of whimsy.

Design Board | Blues, Purples & Pinks

This is a new design board I'm working on for a Client's May 2010 wedding. We are planning to use all seasonal flowers - masses of blue hydrangeas, pink and purple peonies. Her bridesmaids dresses are a light pewter taffeta from J.Crew - a great neutral base to accent with our bright spring colors.

I'm meeting with her tomorrow to see if she likes what I've put together - I'll share our revisions!

Chocolates | Christopher Elbow | Wedding Favors

Last night, Mike and I attended the Chocolate and Wine tasting at the Chocolate exhibit at Union Station. The chocolate tasting was hosted by Christopher Elbow - Kansas City's very own (nationally acclaimed - voted #1 by Food & Wine!) chocolate artisan.

For us to sample, he brought a raspberry chocolate, "A layer of fresh raspberry pate de fruit topped with a dark chocolate-raspberry infused ganache" (via elbowchocolates.com) and a fig and ganache (hello holidays!) - it was delightful. As a person does not typically ooh and aah over chocolates, I have to tell you, these chocolates blew me away. They have such a delicate and luxurious texture, flavor, and ultimate decadent quality.

This is the sample box Christopher brought. He also brought a sampling of his chocolate bar collection (left). I think the tiny confections would be a dream as a favor for a wedding. Can you imagine one of the chocolates below served with coffee or champagne?! Crazy good. The flavors below would be perfect for your wedding...

These are a sampling of the other products they create - perfect for a welcome gift for your guests staying at the hotel!

And this gift box would be a great 'thank you' gift for anyone helping with your wedding (like your coordinator, wink, wink) - a little bit of a splurge - but I'm positive it is worth every penny.

DIY | Fall Inspired Table Setting | Pumpkins | Bouquet

A couple of weeks ago, Claire Ryser of Visionaire Studios came over and we had a fabulous day - she took photos while I put together this flirty Fall table setting. Natasha's Mulberry & Mottcreated the cake - their "Bee Hive" cake - isn't it so whimsical?! I accented the table with Blue Hubbard squash.

This table is all about mixing rustic with refined - For a luxurious yet rustic feel, I layered natural oatmeal linens, a wide burlap runner and a classic ticking stripe runner. I used my mission style farm dining room chairs with ticking stripe pillows for extra comfort.

This bouquet is another example of rustic and refined - I made it with ivory garden roses, soft pink tea roses and wheat.

Natasha Goellner of Natasha's Mulberry & Mott made this "Bee Hive" Cake - the mountain of meringue is so incredible.

I love Natasha's style - very soft and romantic details.

I placed single rose blooms around the table for big impact, but little cost... why spend hundreds on a floral centerpiece when this small bud brings just as much charm!

DIY | Fall Bouquet | Wedding | Claire Ryser Photos

This bouquet of Roses & Wheat is so simple to create!

I started with cream garden roses, pale pink roses, and wheat.

Gather the roses, then wrap with floral tape. Start adding the wheat around the outside, creating a collar of wheat. Then continue to tape until you have a sturdy handle.

Cut the ends of the bouquet (I like about 8 inches of stems below the blooms), then wrap in burlap cover all of the floral tape. Secure the burlap with pearl pins.

While at my sister's house for Thanksgiving, I was bragging about one of our new Bliss List Members, Stella & Dot... so, we went to the website and I decided to do a little Christmas Listing with my Mom and Sister in between turkey bastings. Here's what I came up with...

ABOVE : I love this smoky drop earring. I am typically only seen in really simple studs (diamonds or pearls), but I love these - I think they are so sophisticated. And to top it off - $38. They definitely look a lot more expensive than that!

My friend has these - they look real! Not kidding, when I saw them I thought they had been a gift for her wedding. At a whopping $39 they're quite a steal.

This is so delicate - I love the tiny feather!

Stationery | DIY Invitations

I know this site is all about weddings... but I couldn't resist sharing these invitations I made for a baby shower. The shower is in January, and she isn't finding out if the baby is a boy or a girl - so, this neutral "winter wonderland" theme worked great.

I started with a design that I created on my computer, then printed it on textured cream paper.

I cut it to size, then pasted it to a piece of grey cardstock that would fit nicely into an envelope.

Then, I used a glue pen to fill the bird with glue, then, using a fine grain silver glitter, I glittered the bird.

Finally, I wrapped each invitation, in a creamy flocked velvet paper and tied a piece of "angel fleece" yarn around it. I used a textured cream envelope to complete the invitation.

Like most newly engaged brides, my head is filled with color palettes, flowers, dresses, stationery and cakes... to get all of this under control, I'm going to create several design boards and share them with Mike (and the blog)... it will be a surprise as to which one I choose!

I LOVE this color palette - to me it screams (or maybe it sighs softly...) sweetness. Soft blues and greys, beautiful white flowers (peonies, garden roses) and rich satin.

It is no secret... J.Crew is my favorite place to shop. They always have the most classic bridesmaid dresses in great colors. Better yet - they have terrific sales! For example, you can get this bridesmaid dress for around $60! It was originally $215, but drastically reduced right now... if you know the color you want, follow my Mom's advice, "Just watch it for a while" it will eventually go on sale.

Buttercream Icing

4 sticks of butter, softened

4 cups of powdered sugar

beans from 1/2 of a vanilla bean

Cream together the butter and the sugar, then beat on high for 5-7 minutes. Add the vanilla bean seeds. You can add milk, cream or water to thin the icing, if necessary.

"Hosting an elegant brunch can be easy.

That’s because you can do so much of the prep work the night before, says Jenny Steffens of Fairway, owner of Occasions Entertaining and the Bliss List, a wedding-vendor blog in Kansas City. Flowers can be purchased and arranged. And much of the food can be assembled in advance.

At A Thyme for Everything, a gourmet store in downtown Lee’s Summit, Steffens recently demonstrated how to make a four-course brunch. The dishes are special enough for Easter but can work for any late-morning spring day.

“When I think of brunch, I want something that’s going to fill me up until I have popcorn at eight o’clock at night,” she says. “But like the Barefoot Contessa says, I want it to be simple so I can have fun, too..."
